Equine-Assisted Therapy at Dark Horse Counselling
Equine-assisted therapy is an evidence-based approach that is gaining recognition for its
profound impact on mental health and wellbeing. Horses are highly sensitive animals, finely
attuned to nonverbal communication. Their ability to respond to human emotions and body
language makes them powerful partners in the therapeutic process.
During equine-assisted therapy sessions, individuals interact with horses in a safe and
supportive environment. These interactions provide immediate, non-judgmental feedback that can highlight emotional patterns, strengthen self-awareness, and build insight. The presence of horses has also been shown to reduce stress, regulate the nervous system, and encourage mindfulness by drawing attention to the present moment.
Research suggests that equine-assisted therapy can support emotional regulation, improve
communication skills, and foster resilience. The physical aspect of working alongside
horses—leading, grooming, or observing—can enhance relaxation, build confidence, and
nurture empathy and connection.
At Dark Horse Counselling, I love to weave equine-assisted therapy into a holistic
framework that also includes counselling and movement-based practices. This approach
allows me to support clients in strengthening the mind-body connection, building coping
strategies, and uncovering new pathways to growth and healing.
Equine-assisted therapy isn’t about riding—it’s about relationship. It’s about the space
created when human and horse meet, and the opportunity that space provides for reflection,
healing, and transformation.
